November 1, 2009
Saints Cosmos and Damian

Galatians 2:16-20:  We hear from St Paul's letter to the Galatians that we are justified by faith in Christ, not by works of the Law;  and that we now live our lives by faith in the Son of God.

Luke 16:19-31:  In the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, our Lord teaches us that giving mercy to others, regardless of the form, is essential to holiness.

Troparion of the Resurrection:  Having learned the joyful message of the Resurrection from the angel, the women Disciples cast from them their parental condemnation, and proudly broke the news to the Disciples, saying, Death has been spoiled.  Christ God is risen, granting the world Great Mercy.

Troparion of the Unmercenary Healers: O holy unmercenaries and wonder-workers, visit our infirmities; freely have ye received, freely give to us.

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter: O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear.  We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.

Kontakion for Usual Sundays:  O undisputed intercessor of Christians, O mediatrix, who is unrejected by the Creator, turn not away from the voice of our petitions though we be sinners; come to us in time, who cry to thee in faith, for thou art good.  Hasten to us with intercessions, O Theotokos, who didst ever intercede for those who honor thee.

We rejoice with Daniel and Elizabeth Root on Simeon's reception into the Church through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism.  The Baptism will take place next Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m.  It will be followed by the Divine Liturgy for the feast of St. Raphael of Brooklyn and a reception afterwards. (There will be no Orthros due to the Baptism.)  The Reader Basil Baker will be Simeon's godfather.  Please pray for Simeon, his parents and godfather.

Please remember the following in your prayers: Amy and Michael Surratt; Brian and Robin Sellers and their unborn child ( she is scheduled to be induced on Nov. 11th); Mary Catherine Long; Bobby and Sue Webb (Deborah Finley's parents); Tom Skirtech, Amy and Brantley Oliver ;  Reader Basil's family (Dad, Bill; sister Betty; and uncle and aunt, James and Sarah Powell),  Aidan Milnor, the Milnor family; Jared and Stacy Autrey and their daughter Olivia Kate (St. Ignatius in Franklin).

New Time for Great Vespers on Saturdays!!  We are praying Ninth Hour on Saturday evenings prior to Great Vespers.  It was also decided by the Parish Council to move Great Vespers to an earlier time.  So, in the future, Ninth Hour will begin at 5:45 p.m., followed immediately by Great Vespers (around 6:00 p.m.).  Please make a note of this change in times.

Please supervise your children to avoid spills, ink stains or marks from their writing and drawing on our new chairs.  We also ask that you not allow them to stand on the kneelers.  Thank you for your help with this.

Sunday Pot Luck!!  The Parish Council has agreed that we will begin having a Pot Luck meal on the first Sunday of each month instead of Coffee Hour.  There will be a sign-up sheet posted on the Bulletin Board in the Fellowship Hall in the weeks prior to the meal, so that we can have an idea of the food that will be brought.  If you can't bring a dish, sign up for set-up or clean-up.  Participation is open to all (men as well as children!!)  This is a wonderful chance for some fellowship.  Please be sure to mark it on your calendars!!

Quotable: "God in His goodness has granted us to see the sun and its light and allows us to enjoy it.  He will grant us also to enjoy His own inaccessible light.  Let the light of the sun be a pledge to us of this, but especially the tranquil light of the holy glory of the Heavenly Father, His only Son, and the Spirit of love bestowed upon our hearts."
