Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost

Galatians 1:11-19:  St. Paul defends his ministry in his letter to the Galatians, telling them of how his former way of life was changed by a direct revelation from the Lord, and of his actions immediately afterwards.

Luke 8:27-39:  From the reading in St Luke, we see Jesus heal a man possessed by demons;  in doing so, Jesus demonstrates His authority over His creation, even when it rebels against Him.

Troparion of the Resurrection:  Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad; for the Lord hath done a mighty act with his own arm.  He hath trampled down death and become the First-born from the dead. He hath delivered us from the depths of hades, granting the world the Great Mercy.

Troparion of the Martyrs:  Thy Martyrs, O Lord, by their struggles have received from thee, our God, imperishable crowns; because acquiring thy strength, they demolished usurpers and crushed the powerless might of Satan.  Therefore, through their intercessions, O Christ God, save our souls.

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter: O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear.  We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.

Kontakion for Usual Sundays:  O undisputed intercessor of Christians, O mediatrix, who is unrejected by the Creator, turn not away from the voice of our petitions though we be sinners; come to us in time, who cry to thee in faith, for thou art good.  Hasten to us with intercessions, O Theotokos, who didst ever intercede for those who honor thee.

(We will not be having Pot Luck on January 3rd, due to the business of the season.)
Sunday Pot Luck!!  The Parish Council has agreed that we will begin having a Pot Luck meal on the first Sunday of each month instead of Coffee Hour.  There will be a sign-up sheet posted on the Bulletin Board in the Fellowship Hall in the weeks prior to the meal, so that we can have an idea of the food that will be brought.  If you can't bring a dish, sign up for set-up or clean-up.  Participation is open to all (men as well as children!!)  This is a wonderful chance for some fellowship.  Please be sure to mark it on your calendars!!

Quotable: "Let your prayer be completely simple.  For both the publican and the prodigal son were reconciled to God by a single phrase."
    - St. John Climacus

Weekly Quote: "Therefore if I pray, 'Hallowed be Thy Name,' I ask that these words may effect in me things such as these: May I become through Thy help blameless, just and pious, may I abstain from every evil, speak the truth and do justice.  May I walk in the straight path, shining with temperance, adorned with incorruption, beautiful through wisdom and prudence.  May I meditate on things that are above and despise what is earthly, showing forth the angelic way of life.  These and similar things are comprised in this pettion by which we pray to God. . .for a man can glorify God in no other way save by his virtue, his way of life, which bears witness that the Divine Power is the cause of his goodness."
    - Saint Gregory of Nyssa
