September 27, 2009
Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost

II Corinthians 6:1-10:  In our reading from II Corinthians, St Paul commends his and the other apostles' ministry as servants of God, explaining the means by which they were able to endure all things for the glory of God.

Luke 5:1-11:  In the reading from the Gospel of St Luke we see Simon Peter, James, and John become disciples of our Lord.

Troparion of the Resurrection:  Thou didst shatter death by thy Cross; thou didst open paradise to the thief; thou didst turn the mourning of the ointment-bearing women into joy, and didst bid thine Apostles proclaim warning that thou hast risen, O Christ, granting the world Great Mercy.

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter:  O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear.  We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.

Kontakion for Usual Sundays:  O undisputed intercessor of Christians, O mediatrix, who is unrejected by the Creator, turn not away from the voice of our petitions though we be sinners; come to us in time, who cry to thee in faith, for thou art good.  Hasten to us with intercessions, O Theotokos, who didst ever intercede for those who honor thee.

Sunday School!  Sunday School has resumed!  Thanks to our teachers who volunteer for this important service to our church.  Parents are asked to have their children attend and be on time!

New Time for Great Vespers on Saturdays!!  We will begin to pray Ninth Hour on Saturday evenings prior to Great Vespers.  It was also decided by the Parish Council to move Great Vespers to an earlier time.  So, in the future, Ninth Hour will begin at 5:45 p.m., followed immediately by Great Vespers (around 6:00 p.m.).  Please make a note of this change in times.

Sunday Pot Luck!!  The Parish Council has agreed that we will begin having a Pot Luck meal on the first Sunday of each month instead of Coffee Hour.  There will be a sign-up sheet posted on the Bulletin Board in the Fellowship Hall in the weeks prior to the meal, so that we can have an idea of the food that will be brought.  If you can't bring a dish, sign up for set-up or clean-up.  Participation is open to all (men as well as children!!)  This is a wonderful chance for some fellowship.  Please be sure to mark it on your calendars!!

Axios! He is Worthy!  Father Michael Dahulich has been elevated to the office of Bishop of New York and New Jersey in the OCA.  Please pray for him as he assumes this office and also for St. Thikon's Seminary where he has been serving as Dean.

Hay Ride!!!  Our annual Hay Ride is scheduled for Saturday, October 24th at the Nichols Boyd Pumpkin Patch where we have gone in the past.  We will not have Great Vespers that evening due to this activity.  Jennifer Skirtech is in charge and will have more information available shortly.  In the meantime, however, we need to get a head count.  A sign-up sheet is in the Fellowship Hall.  Please let us know if you are planning to attend.

St. Peter shirts....several of you placed an order for one of the shirts with our name on them.  They have arrived and the cost is $30.  If you ordered one of these, please see Fr. John.  We do have a few extras if someone wanted one but was unable to order it.

The Young Adults have begun meeting on Sunday evenings every other week at 5:30 p.m. They will begin reading the book Feast of Friendship by Fr. Those hosting Coffee Hour or feasts MUST be sure to place fresh trash bags in the trash cans when cleaning up afterwards.  If this is not done, items get thrown into the empty trash cans and then dumped as is into the cans outside.  The trash people will NOT pick up loose trash from the cans and have even dumped it out in the past.  This means that Father John has to pick these items up by hand and bag them!  Please help us with this!!

Please supervise your children to avoid spills, ink stains or marks from their writing and drawing on our new chairs.  We also ask that you not allow them to stand on the kneelers.  Thank you for your help with this.

If you are the last to leave the building, please make sure that the heating and cooling unit in the Fellowship Hall is set to the optimum temperature for the building when unoccupied.

Quotable: "Evil does not exist by nature, nor is any man naturally evil, for God made nothing that was not good.  When in the desire of his heart, someone conceives and gives form to what in reality has no existence, then what he desires begins to exist.  We should therefore turn our attention away from the inclination to evil and concentrate it on the remembrance of God; for good, which exists by nature, is more powerful than our inclination to evil.  The one has existence while the other has not, except when we give existence through our actions."
    - St. Diadochos of Photiki

Weekly Quote: "As the unborn babe in his mother's womb is not at once fashioned into a man, but the image is formed by degrees and born, and even then is not full grown, but takes many years to develop and become a man; and, again, as the seeds of barley or of wheat do not rot the moment they are put into the ground, but cold and wind pass over them, and then in due time the ears form; and the man who plants a pear tree does not at once partake of the fruit; so likewise in spiritual things, where there is so much wisdom and delicacy employed, it is only by little that a man grows and comes to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature (Eph. 4:13), not, as some say, 'Off with one coat, and on with another'."
    - Saints Basanuphius and John

Sunday after the Elevation of the Holy Cross

Galatians 2:16-20:  We hear from St Paul's letter to the Galatians that we are justified by faith in Christ, not by works of the Law;  and that we now live our lives by faith in the Son of God.

Mark 8:34-9:1:  In our reading from the gospel of Mark we hear our Lord tell His disciples that self-denial is required for true spirituality.

Troparion of the Resurrection:  When Mary stood at thy grave looking for thy sacred body, angelic powers shone above thy revered tomb, and the soldiers who were to keep guard became as dead men.  Thou led hades captive and wast not tempted thereby.  Thou didst meet the Virgin and didst give life to the world;  O thou who art risen from the dead!  O Lord, glory to thee.

Troparion of the Holy Cross:  O Lord, save thy people and bless thine inheritance, granting our believing kings victory over the Barbarians, and by the power of thy Cross preserving thy commonwealth.

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter: O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear.  We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.

Kontakion of the Holy Cross:  Do thou, who of thine own good will wast lifted up upon the Cross, O Christ our God, bestow thy bounties upon the new nation which is called by thy Name; make glad in thy might those who lawfully govern, that with them we may led to victory over our adversaries, having in thine aid a weapon of peace and a trophy invincible.

Forefeast and Sunday Before the Elevation of the Holy Cross

Galatians 6:11-18:  In the conclusion of his letter to the Galatians, St Paul reminds them that to be circumcised or uncircumcised is not the issue, but rather to be a new creation in Christ Jesus.

John 3:13-17:  In the Gospel of John we hear Jesus speak concerning His purpose for coming into the world:  to save mankind through His death and Resurrection.

Troparion of the Resurrection:  Let us believers praise and worship the Word, co-eternal with the Father and the Spirit, born of the Virgin for our salvation; for he took pleasure in ascending the Cross in the flesh, to suffer death, and to raise the dead by his glorious Resurrection.

Troparion of the Commemoration: As Thou dist reveal from on high the splendor of the heavens, so Thou didst reveal on earth the splendor of the dwelling of Thy holy glory!  Make it stand firm forever and accept there the supplications which we offer Thee unceasingly through the Theotokos, Life and Resurrection of all!

Troparion of the Forefeast of the Cross: We offer in supplication the life-creating cross of Thy goodness, Lord, which Thou hast granted to us who art unworthy: save the Orthodox Christians, only Lover of mankind, through the Theotokos.

Monday, September 14   (Feast of the Elevation of the Holy Cross)
This feast is celebrated as one of the most important in the Church Year because it commemorates two events of great significance.  After St. Helen had found at Jerusalem the cross upon which Christ was crucified, she built a Church on Mount Calvary to hold the precious relic.  The Christians held the Holy Cross in such high regard that they soon began to celebrate this feast in honor of the finding of the Cross.
In the year 614, the Persians invaded the Empire and took Jerusalem, and sent the case containing the Cross back to their country.  For fifteen years the Greek Emperor Heraclius waged war against the Persians, and finally in 629 defeated them, forcing them to make peace, and to restore the Holy Cross to him.  It is said that the case containing the sacred relics was returned to him with the seals still unbroken.  The Relics were replaced in the Church with great rejoicing, and to the original Feast in honor of the finding of the Cross was added another, in honor of its safe return to Jerusalem.
A special feature of the Church Services on this day, is the procession in which the Cross is borne aloft on a tray of flowers and placed in the midst of the Church; the Priest then elevates it to the four corners of the compass, blessing thrice with it as he does so, and praying that God will protect and preserve the President and the Civil Authorities of our country and the Armed Forces, and guard and guide the Heirarchs and clergy of the Church, and protect and preserve all His faithful people from every evil.

I Corinthians 16:13-24:  St Paul concludes his first letter to the church at Corinth with greetings from the Christians in Asia, and encouragements to be strong in the faith and submit to their spiritual elders.

Matthew 21:33-42:  From St Matthew we hear our Lord use the parable of the landowner to    foretell His' rejection by the Jews and the consequences to them for that rejection.

Troparion of the Resurrection:  Having learned the joyful message of the Resurrection from the angel, the women Disciples cast from them their parental condemnation, and proudly broke the news to the Disciples, saying, Death has been spoiled.  Christ God is risen, granting the world Great Mercy.

Troparion of the Archangel Michael: O ye foremost of the heavenly hosts, we who are unworthy, beseech thee that by thy petitions ye encompass us with the shadow of thine immaterial glory, preserving us who kneel and cry ceaselessly, Deliver us from oppressions, since ye are the prince of rank of dominions on high.

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter: O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear.  We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.

Kontakion of the Nativity of the Theotokos:  By thy holy birth-giving, O pure one, Joachim and Anne were delivered from the reproach of barrenness; and Adam and Eve were delivered from the corruption of death; thy people do celebrate it, having been saved from the stain of iniquity, crying unto thee, The barren doth give birth to the Theotokos, who nourisheth our life.

The first feast of the liturgical year celebrates the birth of the Holy Virgin Mary, most blessed of women, chosen to bear God the Son, partaker in the Incarnation as the dwelling place of God.  To celebrate her birth and give honor to her life is unavoidably to anticipate the coming of the Messiah and to adore His person.  To remember her worthiness is to remember God's grace.  To wonder at her faith is to arouse ourselves to emulate her strength of will and her depth of trust.  As we enter the cycle of the year, we turn first to honor the Holy Virgin, she who by her role in history and by her place among the saints most reminds us of the coming of the Saviour and the life He gives us, who by the Incarnation became the ladder between Heaven and Earth, who as the Mother of Christ is also the Mother of all His brethren.

Quotable: "Prayer is the lifting up of the mind and heart to God, the contemplation of God, the daring converse of the creature with the Creator.  The soul reverently standing before Him as before the King and the Life Itself.  The oblivion of everything that surrounds us.  Prayer is the food of the soul, its air and light, it life-giving warmth, its cleansing from sin; the easy yoke of Christ, His light burden."
    - St. John of Krondstadt

Weekly Quote: "Why do we not voluntarily abandon what must be destroyed when this life comes to an end, so that we might gain the kingdom of Heaven?  Let Christians care for nothing that they cannot take away with them.  We ought rather to seek after that which will lead us to heaven; namely wisdom, chastity, justice, virtue, an ever-watchful mind, care for the poor, firm faith in Christ, a mind that can control anger, hospitality.  Striving after these things, we shall prepare ourselves a dwelling in the land of the peaceful, as it says in the Gospel."

Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost
I Corinthians 15:1-11: Continuing our reading from I Corinthians we hear St Paul present the facts of the resurrection as the basis for our salvation and the cornerstone of our faith.
Matthew 19:16-26: St Matthew describes Jesus' encounter with the rich young ruler. In this incident we learn that spirituality is not founded only on keeping the law, but on giving mercy to others and denial of oneself.
Troparion of the Resurrection: Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad; for the Lord hath done a mighty act with his own arm. He hath trampled down death and become the First-born from the dead. He hath delivered us from the depths of hades, granting the world the Great Mercy.
Troparion for the Forerunner: The memory of the righteous is in praise. And for thee, Forerunner, the testimony of the Lord sufficeth; for in truth thou hast been revealed as nobler than all the Prophets, for having been considered worthy to baptize in the running waters Him who was preached. Therefore, thou dost strive for truth happily. Thou didst proclaim to those in Hades God appearing in the body, the Lifter up of the sin of the world, who granteth us the Great Mercy.

Tuesday, September 1 (Indiction of the Ecclesiastical Year)
September 1 marks the beginning of the ecclesiastical year. The liturgical year is a body of sacred "signs" which have a present effect. Each liturgical feast renews and actualizes the event of which it is the symbol; it takes the event out of the past and makes it immediate; it offers us the appropriate grace; it becomes the "effectual sign." The liturgical year is a special means of union with Christ. Every Eucharist unites us intimately with Christ, for in it He is "both He who offers and He who is offered." Every prayer, being the prayer of the members of the mystical body, shares in the prayer of Him who is the Head of the Body and the only One whose prayer is perfect. We are called to relive the whole life of Christ: from Christmas to Easter, from Easter to Pentecost, we are exhorted to unite ourselves to Christ in his birth and in his growth, to Christ suffering, to Christ dying, to Christ in triumph and to Christ inspiring His Church. The liturgical year forms Christ in us; the liturgical year is Christ Himself, annus est Christus. It includes the cycle of feasts of the saints, the glorified members of the body of Christ. Their sanctity is but an aspect, a shining ray of the holiness of Christ Himself. To celebrate the feast of a saint is to celebrate a special grace that flows from Christ to that saint and so to us. In the same way that the feasts of our Lord in a mysterious way renew the events of His life, so the feasts of the saints make their lives, their merits and their deaths mysteriously actual. Commemorations of the martyrs renew the grace of their violent deaths, so that, as these were a participation in the passion of Christ, this passion is relived in remembering the martyrs. The liturgical year has but one and the same object, Jesus Christ; whether we contemplate Him directly or through the members of His body. Great graces and great spiritual opportunities are offered us during the course of the liturgical year. It provides a frame and support for Christian piety; it gives it a style which is sober and objective; it maintains a bond of unity among believers. Above all, it communicates an inspiration and transmits a life. It acquires its true meaning to the extent that it becomes an adoration in spirit, in truth.
