Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost

I Corinthians 15:1-11:  Continuing our reading from I Corinthians, we hear St. Paul present the facts of the resurrection as the basis for our salvation and the cornerstone of our faith.

Matthew 19:16-26:  St. Matthew describes Jesus' encounter with the rich young ruler.. In this incident we learn that spirituality is not founded only on keeping the law, but on giving mercy to others and denial of oneself.

Troparion of the Resurrection:  Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad; for the Lord hath done a mighty act with his own arm.  He hath trampled down death and become the First-born from the dead. He hath delivered us from the depths of hades, granting the world the Great Mercy.

Troparion of the Martyrs  Adrian and Natalie: Thou didst deem that faith which hath salvation to be riches never lost or plundered.  Thou forsookest thy father=s impiety, and thou didst follow thy Master, becoming rich in His Divine gifts, O glorious Adrian.  With the godly-minded Natalie, who emboldened thee, entreat Christ God, O Martyr, that our souls be saved.

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter: O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear.  We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.

Kontakion of the Nativity of the Theotokos:  By thy holy birth-giving, O pure one, Joachim and Anne were delivered from the reproach of barrenness; and Adam and Eve were delivered from the corruption of death; thy people do celebrate it, having been saved from the stain of iniquity, crying unto thee, The barren doth give birth to the Theotokos, who nourisheth our life.

Please be reminded of the following:
Be very careful with the Blessed Bread when you take it after communion.  Because this bread has been blessed, we should take care not to let crumbs fall on the floor.  Parents, especially, please help your children to choose a small piece and treat it carefully.
Also, at the end of the liturgy, maintain a prayerful disposition during the veneration of the cross as the prayers of thanksgiving after communion are still underway.  Please exchange your greetings with each other in the Fellowship Hall during Coffee Hour.

Please remember the following in your prayers:  Pete and Maria Costas; Steve, Sheryl and Stephen Chamblee; Amy and Brantley Oliver; Aidan Milnor, the Milnor family; Sam and Lamia Dabit and Sammie; David Turner's mother Mary Jean; Georgia Buchanan, George Johns (Georgia's grandson) and his family; Dorin and Carolina Lavric and Victor (Carolina's brother); Mary Greene (Lee and Kh. Sharon's sister); Fr. Stephen Tewfik; Dn. Howard and Sh. Gail Shannon.

Please continue to pray for the health of His Grace, Bishop ANTOUN.

Please be reminded that the Sacristy/Vestry which is adjacent to and behind the altar in our church is considered by the Orthodox Church to be part of the Sanctuary (Altar area) and should not be entered without the blessing of the priest for a specific purpose.  If you need to speak with a member of the clergy while they are in the Sanctuary, please ask them to come to you in the nave.

Please remember Fr. Joseph and Kh. Joanna Bittle, and their daughter Abigail, in your prayers.

We welcome Phillip Schelver today as a new catechumen at St. Peter's.  Please keep him in your prayers.

Quotable:  "Today we have more time to dwell on our problems than our ancestors ever did.  Our free time, whether in old age (now greatly extended) or simply between tasks, is dominated by a hundred and one distractions, often organized to take place one after the other.  Thus, when we do get a free moment, the thoughts in our heads think that nothing is happening and want to move on quickly to something more pressing.  This leaves us with a feeling of 'lack of fulfillment' which some people actually mistake for life itself, when in fact it is simply the chattering of the mind,  It is no more life itself than the exhaust of a bus is the bus itself."

Tenth Sunday after Pentecost
Sunday after the Transfiguration

I Corinthians 4:9-16:  We hear St Paul speak to the Corinthians as their spiritual father and exhort them to imitate him in their actions.

Matthew 17:14-23:  The Lord Jesus again shows His abundant mercy when He heals a boy possessed by a demon.  We also hear Him foretell His betrayal, death and resurrection, but the disciples do not understand.

Troparion of the Resurrection:  The stone being sealed by the Jews, and thy pure body being guarded by the soldiers, thou didst arise on the third day, O Saviour, granting life to the world.  Wherefore, the heavenly powers acclaimed thee, O Giver of life, crying, Glory to thy Resurrection, O Christ! Glory to thy kingdom! Glory to thy gracious providence, O only Lover of mankind.

Troparion of the Transfiguration:  When, O Christ our God, thou wast transfigured on the mountain, thou didst reveal thy glory to thy Disciples in proportion as they could bear it.  Let thine everlasting light also enlighten us sinners, through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Bestower of light, glory to thee.

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter: O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear.  We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.

Kontakion of the Transfiguration: Thou wast transfigured on the mount, and thy Disciples, in so far as they were able, beheld thy glory, O Christ our God; so that, when they should see thee crucified, they would remember that thy suffering was voluntary, and could declare to all the world that thou art truly the effulgent Splendor of the Father.

Quotable:       "Another useful exercise, which tests both the strength of our honesty and the degree of our willingness, is to read the words of Jesus  in the Gospels slowly, listening first with the mind (in the normal way), and then from a place of great stillness.  Get hold of a copy of the New Testament that highlights the words of Jesus in red.  Much of what Jesus says (for example, 'Love your enemies' or 'Blessed are the pure in heart') will be condemned by our minds as dangerous nonsense.  In fact (if we are honest with ourselves), if the words of the Gospel do not make our minds feel very uncomfortable every time we hear them, we are not listening hard enough.  Receiving the words in a place of great stillness, however, gives the teachings a new dimension, one we might learn to recognize as being separate from the mind.  The heart receives the words of Jesus with quiet joy."
"Take care, though, not to have any expectations of what should happen, and don't make the mistake of assuming that you might receive some sort of personal revelation.  As with everything to do with the heart, all that is to be gained from this exercise is a subtle awareness—an awareness that is rich and fulfilling, but also deeply personal.  It makes us alive to a possibility; that is all."
