Eighth Sunday after Pentecost
Sunday after the Dormition

I Corinthians 1:10-17:  St.  Paul appeals to the Corinthians to put away their divisions and to be   joined together in Jesus Christ.

Matthew 14:14-22:  In the reading from St Matthew we hear about Jesus' feeding the five thousand with five loaves of bread and two fish.  In this miracle we see that Jesus is the Bread of Life.

Troparion of the Resurrection: Thou didst shatter death by thy Cross; thou didst open paradise to the thief; thou didst turn the mourning of the ointment-bearing women into joy, and didst bid thine Apostles proclaim warning that thou hast risen, O Christ, granting the world Great Mercy.

Troparion of the Dormition:  In thy birth-giving, O Theotokos, thou didst keep and preserve virginity; and in thy falling-asleep thou hast not forsaken the world; for living thou wast translated, being the Mother of Life.  Wherefore, by thine intercessions, deliver our souls from death.

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter: O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear.  We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.

Kontakion of the Dormition:  Verily, the Theotokos, who is ever watchful in intercessions, who is never rejected, neither tomb nor death could control.  But being the Mother of Life, he who dwelt in her ever-virgin womb didst translate her to life.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Eucharist Bread …was offered by Costas Pavlou  for the Feast of the Dormition this past Wednesday evening and by the Morrises for the Divine Liturgy this morning.

Please be reminded of the following:
Be very careful with the Blessed Bread when you take it after communion.  Because this bread has been blessed, we should take care not to let crumbs fall on the floor.  Parents, especially, please help your children to choose a small piece and treat it carefully.
Also, at the end of the liturgy, maintain a prayerful disposition during the veneration of the cross as the prayers of thanksgiving after communion are still underway.  Please exchange your greetings with each other in the Fellowship Hall during Coffee Hour.

Please continue to pray for the health of His Grace, Bishop ANTOUN.

Next Sunday we will bless the New Construction in the Fellowship Hall.  Afterwards we will have a Celebratory Meal provided by Costas Pavlou.  Families are asked to bring desserts to share.

Calendar Items:
*    The Men of the parish meet for lunch and fellowship on the first Thursday of the month.
*    The remaining date for POT LUCK MEALS this quarter is September 8th (this Sunday is also the Feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos).
*    The Ladies of St. Peter will have a fundraiser on Sunday, September 29th to replenish funds used for charitable activities.  They will be auctioning off casseroles and baked goods during Coffee Hour that Sunday.

Many thanks to Tom Willingham for managing our bookstore for the last few years.   Elizabeth Root has generously agreed to take over the management now.  Many thanks to her as well.

Directory correction:  We recently welcomed Dr. Simon Karam and his wife Rula.  However, Rula's last name was incorrectly spelled.  It should read Dr. Rula Abi-Saleh (not Abi-Salett).

Bible Study with Breakfast will resume on Saturday morning, October 5th from 7:30-9:00 a.m.

Quotable:  "First of all it must be understood that it is the duty of all Christians—especially of those whose calling dedicates them to the spiritual life—to strive always and in every way to be united with God, their creator, lover, benefactor, and their supreme good, by whom and for whom they were created.  This is because the centre and the final purpose of the soul, which God created, must be God Himself alone, and nothing else—God from whom the soul received its life and its nature, and for whom it must eternally live.  For all visible things on earth which are lovable and desirable—riches, glory, wife, children, in a word everything of this world that is beautiful, sweet, and attractive—belong not to the soul but only to the body, and being temporary, will pass away as quickly as a shadow.  But the soul, being eternal by its nature, can attain eternal rest only in the Eternal God:  He is its highest good, more perfect than all beauty, sweetness, and loveliness, and He is its natural home, whence it came and whither it must return.  For as the flesh coming from the earth returns to the earth, so the soul coming from God returns to God and dwells in Him.  For the soul was created by God in order to dwell with Him for ever; therefore in this temporary life we must diligently seek union with God, in order to be accounted worthy to be with Him and in Him eternally in the future life."
