Fourth Sunday after Pentecost

Romans 6:18-23:  St Paul, writing to the Romans, explains that when we were freed from sin we
became slaves to righteousness;  therefore, we must resist enslavement to sin and instead become enslaved to God.

Matthew  8:5-13:  Jesus shows His great mercy to those who have faith in Him when He heals the servant of a centurion.

Troparion of the Resurrection:  Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad; for the Lord hath done a mighty act with his own arm.  He hath trampled down death and become the First-born from the dead. He hath delivered us from the depths of hades, granting the world the Great Mercy.

Troparion of Sts. Simeon and John:  O God of our Fathers, ever dealing with us according to Thy gentleness:  take not Thy mercy from us, but by their entreaties guide our life in peace.

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter: O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear.  We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.

Kontakion of the Theotokos:  O undisputed intercessor of Christians, O mediatrix, who is unrejected by the Creator, turn not away from the voice of our petitions though we be sinners; come to us in time, who cry to thee in faith, for thou art good.  Hasten to us with intercessions, O Theotokos, who didst ever intercede for those who honor thee.

Fr. Alexander Atty, the Dean of St. Thikon's who is battling cancer.

Please be reminded of the following:
Be very careful with the Blessed Bread when you take it after communion.  Because this bread has been blessed, we should take care not to let crumbs fall on the floor.  Parents, especially, please help your children to choose a small piece and treat it carefully.
Also, at the end of the liturgy, maintain a prayerful disposition during the veneration of the cross as the prayers of thanksgiving after communion are still underway.  Please exchange your greetings with each other in the Fellowship Hall during Coffee Hour.

Please be reminded that the Sacristy/Vestry which is adjacent to and behind the altar in our church is considered by the Orthodox Church to be part of the Sanctuary (Altar area) and should not be entered without the blessing of the priest for a specific purpose.  If you need to speak with a member of the clergy while they are in the Sanctuary, please ask them to come to you in the nave.

Continue to pray for Metropolitan Paul (who is also the brother of our Patriarch) and the Syriac Archbishop John of Aleppo who were abducted recently while on a humanitarian mission in Syria.

Please continue to pray for the health of His Grace, Bishop ANTOUN.

This morning we welcome Fr. Nicholas and Kh. Jan Speier who are visiting this week from California.  Fr. Nicholas is the pastor of St. Athanasius Antiochian Orthodox Church in Santa Barbara.

Quotable:  "The first, in other words the prayer of the Church, has an established number of Psalms, troparia, canons, and other hymns, together with rites performed by the priest:  but the other kind of prayer—secret and voluntary—since it has no definite time, is also not limited to a definite number of prayers:  everyone prays as he wishes, sometimes briefly, sometimes at length.  The first kind is performed aloud by the lips and voice, the second only in spirit.  The first is performed standing, the second, not only standing or walking, but also lying down, in a word, always—whenever you happen to raise your mind to God.  The first, made in company with others, is performed in church, or on some special occasion in a house where several people are gathered together; but the second is performed when you are alone in the shut closet, according to the word of the Lord:  'When thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret' (Matt. vi. 6)."
