I Corinthians 3:9-17:  In the reading from I Corinthians St Paul admonishes the Corinthian Church to   give credit to the Lord for the work done by men in building the Church.

 

Matthew 14:22-34:  In our reading from Matthew, we see Jesus' mastery over creation by walking on the Sea of Galilee;  Peter's attempt to join Jesus shows us that our faith is weakened when we take our eyes off the Lord.

 

Troparion of the Resurrection:  O compassionate One, thou didst descend from the heights; thou didst submit to the three-day burial, that thou might deliver us from passion.  Thou art our Life and our Resurrection, O Lord, glory to thee.

 

Troparion of the Transfiguration:  When, O Christ our God, thou wast transfigured on the mountain, thou didst reveal thy glory to thy Disciples in proportion as they could bear it.  Let thine everlasting light also enlighten us sinners, through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Bestower of light, glory to thee.

 

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter: O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear.  We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.

 

Kontakion of the Transfiguration: Thou wast transfigured on the mount, and thy Disciples, in so far as they were able, beheld thy glory, O Christ our God; so that, when they should see thee crucified, they would remember that thy suffering was voluntary, and could declare to all the world that thou art truly the effulgent Splendor of the Father.

Saturday, August 15 (Dormition of the Theotokos)
    We celebrate this month the Feast of the Dormition (or "Falling Asleep") of the Theotokos.  Church Tradition states that the Virgin Mary died in her early fifties.  The icon shows her lying upon her funeral bier.  On either side of the bier stand the Apostles; the group on the left is led by St. Peter who stands at the head of the bier; the group on the right is led by St. Paul who stands at the foot of the bier.  At the time of her death many of the Apostles were scattered throughout the world preaching the Gospel.  However, they all returned to Jerusalem upon learning of her death.  All arrived in time for the burial except St. Thomas.  Standing by the bier is her Son, who had come to receive His Mother's soul into heaven.  He holds in His arms an infant in white symbolizing the soul of the Theotokos.  The Orthodox Church, although it has never had the need to make it a dogma (as has the Roman Catholic Church), also believes in the Virgin Mary's "assumption" or bodily resurrection into heaven.  Tradition relates that when the other disciples showed St. Thomas (who arrived in Jerusalem after the burial) the tomb in Gethsemane where the Theotokos had been buried near her parents, they discovered that the tomb was empty.

Eucharist Bread: ...was offered by the Woods for the Divine Liturgy this morning and by the Hendersons for the Feast of the Transfiguration this past Wednesday evening.

 

Please be very careful with the Blessed Bread when you take after communion or at the end of the liturgy.  Because this bread has been blessed, we should take care not to let crumbs fall on the floor.  Parents, especially, please help your children to choose a small piece and treat it carefully.

 

Congratulations and Many Years!  Congratulations to Daniel and Elizabeth Root of the arrival of Simeon Paul this past Tuesday morning.  Vital statistics: 8 pounds, 1 ounce; 20 ½ inches!!  Parents and son doing well!  May God grant them many years! ...and to Grandparents Deacon Richard and Margaret.

 * The feast of the Dormition falls on Saturday this year.  We will be having Great Vespers on Friday evening, August 14th at 6:30 p.m. and Orthros and Divine Liturgy on Saturday morning, August 15th , beginning at 9:00 a.m.

St. Peter shirts....several of you placed an order for one of the shirts with our name on them.  They have arrived and the cost is $30.  If you ordered one of these, please see Fr. John.  We do have a few extras if someone wanted one but was unable to order it.

 

Fasting Discipline for August
The traditional fasting (no meat, fish, dairy, wine or oil) is observed August 1 through 14 (the Dormition Fast), except on August 6 (the Feast of the Transfiguration) when fish and wine are permitted.  After the 15th  the traditional is observed on the remaining Wednesdays and Fridays of the month.  August 29th is also a strict fast day in remembrance of the Beheading of the Forerunner.

Please supervise your children to avoid spills, ink stains or marks from their writing and drawing on our new chairs.  We also ask that you not allow them to stand on the kneelers.  Thank you for your help with this.

 

Those hosting Coffee Hour or feasts MUST be sure to place fresh trash bags in the trash cans when cleaning up afterwards.  If this is not done, items get thrown into the empty trash cans and then dumped as is into the cans outside.  The trash people will NOT pick up loose trash from the cans and have even dumped it out in the past.  This means that Father John has to pick these items up by hand and bag them!  Please help us with this!!

 

If you are the last to leave the building, please make sure that the heating and cooling unit in the Fellowship Hall is set to the optimum temperature for the building when unoccupied.  If you have overridden the programmed setting, please be sure to restore it to the original setting.  We are trying to keep our utility costs down.  If you do not know how to operate the thermostat, please consult with either Father James or Deacon Richard for instruction.
