Eighth Sunday after Pentecost

I Corinthians 1:10-17:  St.  Paul appeals to the Corinthians to put away their divisions and to be joined together in Jesus Christ.

Matthew 14:14-22:  In the reading from St Matthew we hear about Jesus' feeding the five thousand with five loaves of bread and two fish.  In this miracle we see that Jesus is the Bread of Life.

Troparion of the Resurrection: Thou didst shatter death by thy Cross; thou didst open paradise to the thief; thou didst turn the mourning of the ointment-bearing women into joy, and didst bid thine Apostles proclaim warning that thou hast risen, O Christ, granting the world Great Mercy.

Troparion of the Proto-Martyr Stephen: The crown of the Kingdom hath adorned the brow of thy holy head because of the contests that thou hast endured for Christ God, thou first of the martyred Saints; for when thou hadst censured the Jews' madness, thou sawest Christ thy Saviour standing at the right hand of the Father.  O Stephen, ever pray to Him for us, that He would save our souls.

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter: O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear.  We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.

Kontakion for Usual Sundays:  O undisputed intercessor of Christians, O mediatrix, who is unrejected by the Creator, turn not away from the voice of our petitions though we be sinners; come to us in time, who cry to thee in faith, for thou art good.  Hasten to us with intercessions, O Theotokos, who didst ever intercede for those who honor thee.

Thursday, August 6 (Feast of the Transfiguration)
Before His Passion, Jesus ascended Mount Tabor with His disciples Peter, James and John, for the purpose of prayer.  There the three disciples beheld Him transfigured and saw a vision in which Moses the Lawgiver (shown on the icon on the right holding the tablets of the Law) and Elijah the Prophet appeared and spoke with Him.  "And He was transfigured before them, and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became white as light.  And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with Him" (Matt. 17:2-3).  The fact that Moses and Elijah appeared at the Transfiguration is very significant in that these two men were the leading figures of the Old Testament - which confirms the fact that Jesus is the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets (see Matthew 5:17).  Their presence confirmed that Jesus was indeed the Christ, the Messiah whom the people of the Old Testament had been anticipating.  The Gospel account also says that a voice from a bright cloud said "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased, listen to Him" (Matt. 17:5), further confirming the person of Jesus as the divine Messiah.  When the three disciples saw and heard these things they fell on their faces and were filled with awe (this is shown on the icon by the way Peter, James and John are depicted at the foot of the mount).  When they came down the mountain Jesus told His disciples to "tell no one the vision, until the Son of man is raised from the dead" (Matt. 17:9).  Jesus did not want everyone to know what had happened until the time was right.  The Kontakion of the feast gives understanding as to why Jesus allowed Peter, James and John to be present at His transfiguration: "On the mountain wast Thou transfigured, O Christ God, and Thy disciples beheld Thy glory as far as they could see it; so that when they would behold Thee crucified, they would understand that Thy suffering was voluntary, and would proclaim to the world that Thou art truly the Radiance of the Father."

Fasting Discipline for August
The traditional fasting (no meat, fish, dairy, wine or oil) is observed August 1 through 14 (the Dormition Fast), except on August 6 (the Feast of the Transfiguration) when fish and wine are permitted.  After the 15th  the traditional is observed on the remaining Wednesdays and Fridays of the month.  August 29th is also a strict fast day in remembrance of the Beheading of the Forerunner.

Major Commemorations During August
Aug 1   Procession of the Cross
Aug 6   Transfiguration of Our Lord
Aug 15   Dormition of the Theotokos
Aug 29   Beheading of the Forerunner, John the Baptist (strict fast day)
Please supervise your children to avoid spills, ink stains or marks from their writing and drawing on our new chairs.  We also ask that you not allow them to stand on the kneelers.  Thank you for your help with this.

Those hosting Coffee Hour or feasts MUST be sure to place fresh trash bags in the trash cans when cleaning up afterwards.  If this is not done, items get thrown into the empty trash cans and then dumped as is into the cans outside.  The trash people will NOT pick up loose trash from the cans and have even dumped it out in the past.  This means that Father John has to pick these items up by hand and bag them!  Please help us with this!!

If you are the last to leave the building, please make sure that the heating and cooling unit in the Fellowship Hall is set to the optimum temperature for the building when unoccupied.  If you have overridden the programmed setting, please be sure to restore it to the original setting.  We are trying to keep our utility costs down.  If you do not know how to operate the thermostat, please consult with either Father James or Deacon Richard for instruction.

Quotable:  "Do not hate the sinner.  We are, indeed, all laden with guilt.  If for the sake of God you are moved to oppose him, weep over him.  Why do you hate him?  Hate his sins and pray for him, that you may imitate Christ, who was not wroth with sinners, but interceded for them."
    - St. Isaac the Syrian

Weekly Quote:  "Hear and be comforted, beloved, how merciful is God!  To the sinful woman He forgave her offenses; yea, He upheld her when she was afflicted.  With clay He opened the eyes of the blind, so that the eyeballs beheld the light.  To the palsied He granted healing, who arose and walked and carried his bed.  And to us He has given the pearls; His holy Body and Blood."
    - St. Ephraim the Syrian

Seventh Sunday after Pentecost

Galatians 3:23-29;4:1-5:  In this reading from Galatians we hear St. Paul explain that prior to the coming of Christ, we were under the Law and hence divided, but now that Christ has come we are justified by faith in Christ and have become one, belonging to Christ.  Therefore, we are no longer under bondage to the Law and the world, but are now free as children of God.

Matthew 9:27-35:  The Lord Jesus again demonstrates His mercy by healing two blind men and casting out a demon from a man possessed.  We see that the Lord has compassion for all those who are oppressed by sin, death and Satan.

Troparion of the Resurrection:  When Mary stood at thy grave looking for thy sacred body, angelic powers shone above thy revered tomb, and the soldiers who were to keep guard became as dead men.  Thou led hades captive and wast not tempted thereby.  Thou didst meet the Virgin and didst give life to the world;  O thou who art risen from the dead!  O Lord, glory to thee.

Troparion of St. Paraskeva:  Through thee the divine likeness was securely preserved, O Mother Paraskeva; for thou didst carry the cross and followed Christ.  By example and precept thou didst teach us to ignore the body because it is perishable, and to attend to the concerns of the undying soul.  Therefore, doth thy soul rejoice with the angels.

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter: O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear.  We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.

Quotable: "How can I prepare for death in a Christian manner?  By means of faith and good works and by bravely bearing the miseries and sorrows that happen to you, so as to be able to meet death fearlessly, peacefully and without shame."
    - St. John of Krondstadt

Weekly Quote: "We are constantly occupied by all kinds of thoughts that appear in our heads, and it seems we no sooner start to pray than we catch ourselves thinking about something else.  Here, again the physical presence of the prayer rope in our fingers can help us catch ourselves and return to our task of prayer more quickly.  Or, meeting up with one of our markers or with the cross on the prayer rope as we move it through our fingers reminds us that we have been robbed of the prayers we intended to offer.  And immediately we can offer our prayers anew without getting further entangled in our thoughts about how easily we get distracted from prayer to God."
    - Bishop IGNATIUS Brianchaninov

Troparion of the Holy Fathers: Thou, O Christ, art our God of exceeding praise who didst establish our holy Fathers as luminous stars upon earth, and through them didst guide us unto the true Faith, O most merciful One, glory to thee.

Quotable: "Do you desire to have communion with God in your mind by receiving the perception of that delight which is not subject to the senses?  Cleave to mercy.  For if mercy is found within you, it is formed by that holy beauty which it resembles."

Weekly Quote:  "He who loves God both believes truly and performs the works of faith reverently.  But he who only believes and does not love lacks even the faith he thinks he has; for he believes merely with a certain superficiality of intellect and is not energized by the full force of love's glory.  The chief part of virtue, then, is faith energized by love."

Announcements for Sunday, July 12, 2009

July 12, 2009
Fifth Sunday after Pentecost

Romans 10:1-10:  St Paul, writing to the Romans, contrasts the righteousness of the law with the righteousness of faith and goes on to say that if we confess with our mouth and believe in our hearts that Jesus is Lord, then we shall be saved.

Matthew 8:28-34; 9:1:  In the gospel reading we see the authority of Jesus over the demons, who know   that they have been defeated even before the appointed time of His resurrection and later His second advent.

Troparion of the Resurrection:  Having learned the joyful message of the Resurrection from the angel, the women Disciples cast from them their parental condemnation, and proudly broke the news to the Disciples, saying, Death has been spoiled.  Christ God is risen, granting the world Great Mercy.

Quotable: "With the mental eyes of my heart, I see how I breathe Christ into my heart, how He enters into it and suddenly tranquilizes and rejoices it.  O, do no leave me to dwell alone, without Thyself, the Life-giver, my breath, my joy!  It is hard for me to be left without Thee."
    - St. John of Krondstadt

Weekly Quote:  "We cannot 'prove' the existence of God, the Resurrection, or any of our beliefs in the way that we can 'prove' a mathematical or scientific assertion. Logically it is possible that there is no god, that all of 'reality' is accidental and meaningless. Sometimes we are especially conscious of this possibility and troubled by it. Sometimes just a particular aspect or doctrine of our faith, such as the Virgin Birth, becomes the subject of doubt. The 'good doubt' consists in not accepting doubt as final, in continuing to cry out to God even in the midst of doubt. The model here is the father of the demon-possessed boy who 'cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief' (St. Mark 9:24). In spite of his doubt, St. Thomas rejoined the other Apostles. Our faith is not about proofs but about a relationship with God as a person, and a relationship with any person involves faithfulness, patience and trust. From the 'good doubt' a deeper relationship and understanding can emerge. Likewise in the case of a doctrine, a good doubter might say, this doctrine seems wrong or unbelievable to me, but I recognize that over many centuries many Christians wiser than I have believed it, so I will place it in the Lord's hands and ask Him to enlighten me about it.
A 'bad' doubter, on the other hand, is content. He says, 'I'm a Christian, but I'll decide what I'll believe.' Sometimes this is related to an unwillingness to obey God in some area. When doubts arise, continue to pray and try to obey God, and in time He will reward your faithfulness."

Romans 6:18-23:  St Paul, writing to the Romans, explains that when we were freed from sin we became slaves to righteousness;  therefore, we must resist enslavement to sin and instead become enslaved to God.

Matthew  8:5-13:  Jesus shows His great mercy to those who have faith in Him when He heals the servant of a centurion.

Troparion of the Resurrection:  Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad; for the Lord hath done a mighty act with his own arm.  He hath trampled down death and become the First-born from the dead. He hath delivered us from the depths of hades, granting the world the Great Mercy.

Troparion for the Holy Martyrs, the Grand Duchess Elizabeth, the Novice Barbara and those with them: Emulating the Lord's self-abasement on the earth, thou didst forsake royal mansions to serve the poor and disdained, overflowing with compassion for the suffering.  And taking up a martyr's cross, thou in meekness didst perfect the Saviour's image within thee.  Wherefore, with Barbara, entreat Him to save us all, O wise Elizabeth.

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter: O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear.  We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.
