July 3, 2011
Third Sunday after Pentecost

Romans 5:1-10:  In his letter to the Romans, St Paul establishes that our standing before God is the result of faith whereby we are justified and thus receive the benefits of His salvation.

Matthew 6:22-33:  Our Lord teaches us that striving for the things of God rather than the things of the world will enable us to be at peace about what we need to live in this world.

Troparion of the Resurrection:  When thou, O immortal Life, didst humble thyself unto death, then didst thou destroy death by the brightness of thy Godhead; and when thou didst raise the bowels of the earth, then all the heavenly powers exclaimed, O Christ, thou art the Giver of life!  Glory to thee, O our God!

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter: O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear.  We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.

Kontakion of the Theotokos:  O undisputed intercessor of Christians, O mediatrix, who is unrejected by the Creator, turn not away from the voice of our petitions though we be sinners; come to us in time, who cry to thee in faith, for thou art good.  Hasten to us with intercessions, O Theotokos, who didst ever intercede for those who honor thee.

Quotable:  "There are earthly medicines for earthly diseases.  And there is an Omnipotent Heavenly Doctor and heavenly medicines for the most terrible disease called sin.  This Doctor is Jesus Christ.  Because every sin is a transgression of God's holy law, only God can forgive sins with His wondrous omnipotence.  He can blot out sins as if they never existed.  Though your sins be as purple, I will make them white as snow; though they be as scarlet, I will make them white as wool (Is. 1:18), He promises.  But for this to happen, there is one requirement for us---to repent truly."

Second Sunday after Pentecost

Romans 2:10-16:  In our reading from Romans we hear St Paul tell us that the Gentiles who obey the Law of God and yet are unbelievers do so out of knowledge of the Law written in their hearts and will be judged by the Lord.

Matthew 4:18-23:  In the reading from Matthew we see our Lord begin His public ministry by settling in the region of Galilee and calling His first four disciples.

Troparion of the Resurrection:  The stone being sealed by the Jews, and thy pure body being guarded by the soldiers, thou didst arise on the third day, O Saviour, granting life to the world.  Wherefore, the heavenly powers acclaimed thee, O Giver of life, crying, Glory to thy Resurrection, O Christ! Glory to thy kingdom! Glory to thy gracious providence, O only Lover of mankind.

Troparion of the Righteous Father David of Thessalonika: In thee the image was preserved with exactness, O Father; for taking up thy cross, thou didst follow Christ, and by thy deeds thou didst teach us to overlook the flesh, for it passeth away, but to attend to the soul since it is immortal.  Wherefore, O righteous David, thy spirit rejoiceth with the angels.
